In the Workplace: Cut to the Chase

GroupOn Founder & CEO Andrew Mason InterviewAccording to research by leadership experts Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, honesty is the most important attribute we look for in leaders. It comes before everything else, including being competent.

Honesty is so lacking in today’s leaders that it really is refreshing and even startling when we see it. So when Groupon CEO Andrew Mason was fired, it was his note to employees that made news as much as his ouster. He was honest. In part, he wrote:

People of Groupon,

After four and a half intense and wonderful years as CEO of Groupon, I’ve decided that I’d like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding – I was fired today. If you’re wondering why… you haven’t been paying attention… As CEO, I am accountable.

For those who are concerned about me, please don’t be… I’m OK with having failed at this part of the journey.

I bet honest and candid Andrew won’t have trouble finding a new job.
